C' est La Vie !!

In 2014, I received an order for a Paris themed 13th birthday party. If I could go anywhere in the world, it would be Paris, France, so I was really excited for this order. Little did I know that this would be the set that would start a whole new chapter in my cookie journey.

There are so many fun things you can do with a french themed set It was hard for me to stick to just the Eiffel tower as the only Paris icon. I decided to add plaques with the birthday girls’ initial and a few french words.

Becca also wanted the color purple and butterflies to be a part of her order. Taking each part of what a client shares and finding a cohesive way to bring it all together into the perfect set of cookies is always a fun challenge! I really loved how this set came out even though I struggled a bit with the butterfly design. To this day, it’s still a cookie that I struggle with.

Here is where a few things intersect; the first takes us back to the days of when blogs ruled the world. The Lettered Cottage was and is one of my favorites. I can remember years ago walking through a Home Depot and seeing Layla and Kevin Palmer on the cover of a magazine and thinking, “I know them!”. Isn’t it funny how social media makes us all feel like we’re friends?

When Instagram graced the socials with it’s presence in the fall of 2010 I found Layla and so many other talented people to follow! Through Layla I found Evan G. Cooper, an Alabama based wedding and event planner. I instantly fell in love with the gorgeous wedding and floral photos that he shared in his feed.

Eventually Evan followed me back and would occasionally leave a comment. At this time I didn’t have a separate IG for cookies, it was just mixed in with my personal feed. After sharing the Paris themed set on Instagram, Evan left me a comment that read something like this, “I sure wish you shipped, because I could use some cookies for a party I have in a few weeks!” {insert bulgy eyed, jaw dropping emoji here}

Once I recovered from such a message I kindly asked him for his email and told him that I would love to talk to him more about this party and the possibility of shipping cookies. I hadn’t ever shipped cookies before and had no idea where to even begin. I was not about to let that stop me though. I found out what he was looking for, gave him a price and waited. In the meantime I took to the internet to learn how to ship!!

Turn Back Time

So we’ve decided to take a bit of a break in the new year. Some things in our lives are shifting and we need to adjust accordingly. But since you all are super awesome and we love you, we didn’t want to leave you in the dark. We thought it would be fun to turn the clock back and take you along as we re-visit our journey from the beginning. You can follow along just on Instagram if you’d like with the pictures and short captions or come over here and sit for a bit as we share the stories behind the cookies! It should be fun and we sure do hope you’ll stick around!

So here’s the story: I’ve always enjoyed baking and with five kiddos, you know Christmas Sugar Cookies were a hot mess of poorly chosen sanding sugars and sprinkles, not to mention the very generous amounts that each cookie received. Ahhhh the good ole’ days. Such fond memories, maybe it was such a mess because I was too busy watching the visions of perfectly decorated sugar cookies dancing in my head. You’ve seen them on the magazines, the perfect royal icing, Holly Jolly Santa with an actual twinkle in his eye, super cute mittens with delicate snowflakes!! Gahhhhhh I just knew I had it in me and couldn’t wait to give it a try!!!

Flash forward a bit and we find a beautiful snowy day brought just that opportunity to my door!!! My children had been all bundled up in their many layers and sent outside to frolic in the snow and that’s when it hit me!!! THIS IS MY CHANCE!!! So I grabbed the magazine, all of my supplies and got to work!! It was glorious!!!! Sadly I don’t have any pictures from those early days, but as you’ll soon see, they were not very good. They didn’t look anything like the ones on the magazine cover and the “perfect royal icing” was perfectly spilling over the sides of every cookie!!!!

I didn’t give up though, I started to make them for our family gatherings; Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, you get the point. A few years in and I had started to wonder if anyone outside of the family would be interested in in some of these cookies for their family gatherings. I shared that thought with my husband and just as I had finished I received a Facebook message from my pastors' wife and friend. She was inquiring if I could make 5 dozen engagement sugar cookies for her son’s upcoming engagement party!! After my jaw hit the floor, I explained that I didn’t really know what I was doing but if she was sure, I was willing to give it a shot!!!

Even though the request wasn’t for anything super fancy or technical I was super nervous. An engagement party is a pretty big deal and although the cookies weren’t a vital part of the evening, it still wasn’t something that I wanted to mess up!

So there ya have it!!! Yellow and grey/silver hearts and circles with their initials and love. I had NO idea of how to flood, I hadn’t a CLUE about consistency in my icing, didn’t have a selection of piping tips and certainly didn’t even know that Kopykake was thing!! But my friend loved them, her son and wife-to-be loved them and their friends also loved them. So I continued. I posted to Facebook in February for Valentines Day and they were a hit!!!

Third times a charm

Jaysen and Julia set up our skinny tree the other day and I realized that all of the ornaments and trim that we had for it was previously sold at one of our yard sales. I would have loved to buy all new ornaments, although it would have been really hard to narrow down a style (gosh I just love it all!!).

I remembered my box of dried (read: dead) hydrangeas that were still sitting in the garage and thought I’d use them on/in the tree. I mean, why not? It still doesn’t feel right to just toss them out into the compost - so I might as well get as much use out of them as I can.

On Small Business Saturday, the mister and I visited some of our local shops and I grabbed a few bags of vintage ornaments for $3.00 per bag. I had spotted them a few weeks ago and had talked myself out of buying them then. Do you do that? Of course, I couldn’t stop thinking about them afterwards and I was certain that someone would have grabbed them up at this point. But, there they sat, waiting just for me!!

I love the colors and the age spots, they add so much character and is such a beautiful reminder of days gone by. I wonder, how old are they, how many places did they call home, were they handled by little hands? Did they sit in their box waiting until Christmas Eve to make their debut or were they a part of the entire holiday season? I will never know their history, but I do know that they are cherished right now.

As a little girl, my family and I would wait until Christmas Eve before decorating our tree. Before bed, I was allowed to put the first ornament on the tree and had to leave the rest for Santa. I’m sure as I got older that tradition changed a bit.


Merry Christmas from little Lorraine

I feel like the tree could still use a little something, but I don’t quite know what that is yet. We also need a topper but I have a feeling it’s going to stay exactly the way it is right now - and I’m okay with that.

I am loving the reflections that are bouncing off of the ornaments, from the sun streaming in or the twinkle lights, it’s just beautiful!! Oh let me share one word of caution on using dried flowers on your tree. If you have large dogs with big, wagging tails, you may not want to use dried flowers, unless of course, you’re okay with this happening ….I guess I should have thought that through a little more.
